Homer!!!

July 17: Homer!

We awoke this morning with excited thoughts, “We’re headed to Homer!”  Mike’s parents, Tom and Gail, are currently spending some time in Homer, so we thought we’d drive down to visit and see the sights.  We’re sure glad we did!  What an amazing city and great drive down!  On the way, we did get the chance to have a mother moose with young cross the river in front of us. They even stuck around long enough for some pictures.  Friendly folks, these Alaskans!

This afternoon we also met with our wedding photographer.  Over lemonade and brownies we discussed "the plan."  We are excited to have him document this momentous occasion.  Later we found Gail and Tom and went down to the Homer Spit.  This is a long, narrow road with packed with fishing guides, gifts, and odds and ends.  Taking the advice of our photographer, we located a great wood-fired pizza place to eat called Finns.  We were lucky to have such great advice as it is a super small establishment that we would have walked right past and missed.  It was a unique Alaskan-style restaurant; we ordered food on ground level, left the restaurant, walked up a narrow staircase, then ate in a small solarium that only seats a few lucky patrons.  The thin crust New York Style pizza served was fantastic.  The ambiance was action-packed as we watched fishermen expertly filet today's catch out the window.  Dinner & a show!  Again we left happy & full.

Tomorrow we depart Homer & head to Seward to meet up with Sara's family and her friend Sarah Born.  But, before we leave, we're going to sneak in some last fun in Homer. Sara and Gail will head out on a 4 hour horseback ride and Mike and Tom will be halibut fishing leaving the dock at 6 a.m.  Good times are being had and will continue to be had by all.  Also, as we head to bed this evening, we just got confirmation that Sarah, a friend of Sara, made it to Anchorage.  Half of the wedding party is now officially here.

  1. Anna loved the pic of the humpback whale tale (one of her favorites). Again thanks for sharing, we feel like we're right there with ya )or at least can picture it very well from your awesome descriptions. Will Tom and Gail be shipping any halibut home? Enjoy the rest of your adventure!
