July 16
Our sense of time/date has blurred due to the long daylight hours. Sunset is at ~11 p.m. or so…We have found that we have developed the pattern of going to sleep/waking at late hours. This morning we woke at the Alaska Dacha in Hope, AK. Desperate for a shower, we each forked out $4 for 10 minutes of warm water. The bathing conditions were questionable & reminded Sara of some choice lodging options she had in rural Africa. Sara, for once, was thankful for her near-sightedness & inability to see in the shower. Disenchanted with Hope (Oh the irony!), we took off as fast as we could & headed down the Kenai. After our fairly remote journey thus far, the Kenai Peninsula is a bit jarring to the senses. The roads are alive with those trying to catch their limit of salmon. Large dipnets can be seen on the roofs of most cars.
After stopping to purchase fishing licenses in the town of Kenai, we traveled North to Captain Cook State Recreation Area. At Captain Cook, we were treated to a nice view of the Cook Inlet (including offshore oil drilling platforms, Mt. Iliamna & Mt. Redoubt).
We also tried our hand at fishing first at the Swanson River and then at Stormy Lake. According to our map, we should have caught silver & red salmon, trout & pike. Instead, we enjoyed lentils & rice for dinner.

Overall Driving Mileage Thus Far: 3600 miles and still smiling:)
That first picture of you two is just precious. :) Sounds like the trip of a lifetime!
